I won’t go into a huge explanation of what twitter is, but I will explain how to use twitter to get free MLM leads and build your network marketing business. Twitter is a social networking site that allows you to tell people what you’re up to in a couple of sentences. Like a blog post but not as long. You’re limited to 140 characters per post.
Just like any other social networking site, twitter is a great place to build relationships, not to pitch your opportunity. This is the number one mistake that a lot of network marketers are making right now, not just on twitter but other social networks as well.
The day twitter becomes a total pitch-fest for you is the day you’ll be branded as a spammer. Step number one is be careful not to follow too many people when you first start. You want people to follow you just like you want people to join your MLM, so don’t appear needy by following everybody and their grandmother on twitter.
P.S. and by the way, if your grandmother is using twitter then she is more of techie than I am, so there’s no need to feel intimidated by new technologies. A good rule of thumb is to have more people following you than you are following, so when you first get started it’s a good idea to send an e-mail to everyone you know encouraging them to follow you on twitter. If you follow too many people before anyone follows you, it can earn you a spot on the twitter blacklist, and that’s not the list you want to be on.
Don’t just say “hey you guys, follow me on twitter!” Give people a good reason to follow you for the valuable content you’ll be providing there. The whole point of twitter is to help you brand yourself as a leader that people will be attracted to.
Just like with blogs, twitter is the place to report great things you find out about that actually help people in your market. For example, when I learned how to improve my article marketing skills I told my blog readers about it. Content is king, so there’s no need to use twitter to pitch people. You’ll get to allow your readers to sell themselves on what you’re doing by attracting them to your website later.
Which website should you use for your twitter profile? I use my blog as my twitter profile website link because the whole point of twitter is to help you brand yourself as an expert in your industry, NOT to pitch people on your business opportunity.
The last and final twitter tip is to get more people to follow you, you can put your twitter link in your e-mail signature, in your forum signature, on your blog, on your myspace, on your facebook, anywhere that you do social networking. Here’s another quick tip. Twitter is great for building relationships, so remember to use it for good by sending positive replies to people you are following. To Twitter Or Not to Twitter – That is the Question
Let’s face it: a growing number of people are using Twitter these days (best stats I could find; as of April 2008,Total Users: 1.0+ million; Total Active Users: 200,000 per week; Total Twitter Messages: 3 million/day). This is a lot of people spending a lot of time on Twitter who still need to get things done. Yet many people do not know how to use twitter to it’s full extent. In this article I will summarise some of the key tools that twitter has to offer to integrate it with other tools that you may be using.
If you want to spend a lot of time conversing with people on Twitter, that’s great, but many people still need to get their tasks done. Let’s take a look at how to do that.
Why use Twitter to get things done? Twitter isn’t necessarily the best platform for getting things done but if you’re already using it a lot, it might be easier or faster for you to do things while still in Twitter. Keep in mind if you’re a business owner twitter is a great source of potential business leads, if you know how to tap into it – my next article!
1. Reminders: Need a quick reminder that you have an appointment, or need to follow up on something later? Follow “timer” on Twitter, and send it a direct message with a reminder time and it will ping you at that time. For example: “d timer 30 pick up Chloe”.
2. To-do list: A couple of popular to-do services are on Twitter: Remember the Milk (on Twitter) and Nozbe (on Twitter). Follow them and send them direct messages to add things to your to-do list, or to check the items on your list.
3. Calendar: If you use Google Calendar (gCal), go to Twittercal, then follow gCal on Twitter and add events by sending direct messages to gCal. For example: “d gcal meeting with paul tomorrow at 7pm”.
4. Delegate: If you’re going through your to-do list or email and find a task that’s better suited for someone else, sending that person a direct message (assuming they’re on Twitter) can be quicker and easier than sending an email or making a phone call.
5. Follow up: The same applies to following up. I’ve done it a bunch of times; instead of opening up your email program, composing a new message, typing in the person’s address and the subject line, and then writing the email … you can just direct message them on Twitter: “d zen_habits don’t forget to answer my interview questions”
6. Accountability with goals: Want some extra motivation to achieve your goals? Announce through Twitter or on your blog that you’re going to post your progress updates every day on Twitter. For example, if you’re trying to eat healthier, you can post everything you eat on Twitter. Trying to exercise? Post your workouts on Twitter. It’s great motivation, and you can get some support and encouragement from your Twitter friends.
7. Get info or ideas quickly: If you have a good Twitter network, you can ask a question and usually get a few responses quicker than many other methods. I’ve gotten website and service recommendations, ideas for a post I was writing, restaurant recommendations, people interested in a job, and more.
8. Do real work: It’s possible to do real work on Twitter – people have written stories or posts by writing them in little chunks in Twitter. It might be worth a try. But if that doesn’t work, my strongest recommendation is to turn Twitter off when you need to do some real work. Then, when you’re done, reward yourself with 10 minutes on Twitter if twittering is your thing!

3. TweetPic: very useful tool to submit your pictures, no additional account needed other than your twitter account
4. Tweetbeep: A service to keep track of keywords through alerts that you set up. You’ll get an email notification if anyone mentions you or your brand or your blog posts in their tweets.
5. StrawPoll: create a poll. Your Twitter contacts can participate in the poll by simply sending an @reply message.
6. TwitResponse: allows you to schedule delivery of your tweets – very useful if you want to set up a bunch of tweets in the future.

Twitter Has Limited Potential For Small Business Profit Increases

Twitter is a newer social media platform compared to blogging, or Facebook, but still, it’s been around a few years, and this year (2009) it hit maximum buzz when entertainers like Oprah and sports figures “discovered it”. This drove lots of people to it to at least try it out. There seems to be a lot of people suggesting that participating on Twitter is important, valuable or even essential for business small and large, and it is true that businesses are experimenting with it to communicate with customers and/or create or maintain a brand. Still, the majority of small business people try it and leave, concluding that it’s got limited potential. Why? Because it actually HAS limited potential.
The reality is that while there are a number of loud, persistent people pushing the “twitter agenda”, actual data to support the claim that it increases PROFITS is almost non-existent. Proponents are loud, fanatical, and convinced. That doesn’t change the fact that there aren’t that many businesses with a strong and documented success through using Twitter.
Starting Point
Here are a few things you should know about Twitter so as to be able to make sense of the later comments. Please keep in mind that I use Twitter quite extensively, and I have a long history of being a tech geek coupled with using technology to help my business exist and succeed.
- It may seem that a tweet takes little time to compose. Sometimes that’s the case, and sometimes not, but what we do know is that the “lifespan” of a tweet is exceedingly limited. That is, people will see it or not see it shortly after you send it, and after that immediate period, for all intents and purposes, it’s gone. Compare that with a permanent, longer article on a web site, which takes longer to write, but can be useful and seen by people over YEARS.
- In terms of business the value of the time you spend is going to be directly related to the number of people who read what you write (people who follow you AND read when you send something.)
- The majority of people who might follow you aren’t interested in more than a very small percentage of things you might write.
- It’s very difficult to have enough people following and reading your tweets so that it’s worthwhile spending the time, let alone expect the people will buy something from you, or even visit your website.
- Even more than is the case for blogs, you pretty much have to post to twitter, and interact with other people EVERY DAY. And you have to work and manage your followers (the people who sign on to read what you write), and the people you follow.
In essence the content you create has only “instant” use, and will be hard to reuse or re-purpose. You need to invest in Twitter use with your time to have any hope of achieving anything at all. Even if you do the odds are against you.
Why To Stay Away – Bad Fundamentals Bode Failure
Twitter is almost completely about buzz. You may have seen huge numbers illustrating how many millions of people have signed up. But in fact, the most recent numbers you have probably not heard about indicate that Twitter is NOT doing well, and that it is not going to do well. The majority of people who have tried it don’t like it, and can’t see a use. That’s not surprising because apart from its novelty value, which wears off fast, it has very limited functionality. As a fun thing, it works. As a tool to achieve a goal it doesn’t.
It’s not surprising that the majority of tweets are from marketers selling things (to each other?) and people just having fun. Because it’s simply a fun thing looking for purposes it can fulfil and it’s not finding them.
Fundamentals refer to data/numbers about an endeavor that help us predict how it will do in the future. For example in the stock market, there are indicators that will suggest how that company will fare in the future. For example, a company that sells 1 million widgets at $10 but pays $11 to make them has really really bad fundamentals such that if it doubles its sales (usually a good thing) it will just go bust faster. It’s no different with technologies. So what fundamentals are there to suggest Twitter is a poor investment (of time) for small business. We can draw from recent research published by Sysomos Inc. You can and should look at the numbers, but aggregated the numbers tell a very depressing tale indeed. Many people have joined twitter in 2009, but the huge majority of people don’t use it at all, and are not engaged by it. This is critically important because it’s NOT an issue of people resisting a new thing and not trying it. It’s an issue of people trying it, and not liking it, and abandoning it. For example:
- 85.3% of Twitter users post less than one update a day.
- 21% have never posted a tweat
- 92.4% of users follow less than 100 people (This is important because it tells us that the “effective audience” for a tweet is, in fact, tiny. If they aren’t following you, they won’t see it and most people aren’t following many people.
- Likewise 93.6% of twitter users have less than 100 followers.
- 5% of Twitter users account for 75% if all activity (This is huge. It means the twitter fanatics are driving things and those are not likely to be your customers or future customers).

Twitter is being led by the social media geeks. This particular finding should likely come as no surprise, but 15% of Twitter users who follow more than 2000 people identify themselves as social media marketers. These individuals are more likely to post updates every day (sometimes more than once per day) and also use Twitter more actively for direct communication.
Indeed, these numbers suggest that Twitter is a fad, is more buzz than substance, and has limited business possibilities now and into the future. So, do you want to invest time in establishing a presence on Twitter? Based on these numbers, and the fact that succeeding on Twitter requires time and patience over the long haul, the answer is no. A loud no. Except…
Do It If… you enjoy it and have spare time. If it’s a fun hobby and you have no or little expectations regarding Twitter and your small business, go for it. That’s what I do. I enjoy it. I’m working at it but it’s not really work. If I saw it as work (like doing paperwork, filling out tax forms), I simply would not do it, because the payoff is so unlikely. So here’s the bottom line: Don’t invest your time in Twitter unless it’s fun and recognize:
- you probably will never see any positive business return
- there’s a significant chance that Twitter may not exist in two years
- that what you write is like a feather in the wind and has almost no life span.
Here’s the bottom line for those in a hurry. Do NOT invest the time on twitter with the expectation that it will yield business results. If you want to participate because it’s fun, then do so. But don’t do it for business, because you’ll be disappointed now, and in the future.

Increasing your targeted following on Twitter requires a bit of patience and a well thought-out strategy. Twitter, a micro-blogging social networking site, is popular for businesses because of the no-cost, no-frills way the site is set up. Twitter is used by small companies, as well as larger companies like Starbucks, Dell and JetBlue to connect with their customers and clients, advertise new products, monitor their online brands and in general, monetize their businesses.
There are four steps to increasing your targeted Twitter following. First, follow people on Twitter who you consider to be your target audience. Second, post relevant information about your brand and news that is related to your brand. Third, never spam your followers with auto-tweets, or post the same URL over and over. Many times, these Twitterers will see that you have retweeted them, and will follow you. Smart online marketers monitor their competition on social networks to see what they’re doing right and doing it better. It’s also easier to see when your competition has failed and how you can avoid that. What’s the big idea about having Twitter followers?? This is a question I asked myself for quite some time. What purpose does a big list of Twitter followers serve? How do you increase the number of your followers?
All these are questions asked by users as well as business owners who would like to use Twitter as a professional marketing platform.
We all want to increase our Twitter followers of course. We all want people to read our updates. As a matter of fact, it’s not difficult to build an outstanding profile; however, what you need is to understand how to do all this. What matters the most is not how you tweet or what you say on your updates, but what is important is who you actually are and how you use Twitter.
There are so many articles out there on how to grow your Twitter followers. Many of them teach you how to provide value in your tweets so that you can increase your followers.
My idea is: you don’t need a million followers to promote your business online. Why? Because if you look at the list of Twitter users with the most followers you will that almost everyone on that list is a celebrity. Those people did not build their lists from scratch on Twitter! No way! These celebrities have been building their audience for years before Twitter became popular! So when they go onto Twitter, they automatically built a long list of followers because they were already famous!

I am not saying you shouldn’t get millions. What I am trying to say here is what you need are quality followers. In other words: you don’t need every Tom, Dick and Harry to follow you on Twitter; you need people who are in your niche, people who are interested in the product or service you are offering. Does it make sense now?
This does not mean that can’t build a targeted Twitter list unless you are rich and famous. No. As I mentioned earlier, it is not about what you tweet, but it’s about how you use Twitter. So it’s about quality.
In my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to use Twitter. But here are a few examples of things I use myself and that might help you get more followers:
Treat your Twitter profile as if it were your website or blog:
What’s the use of having a blog or a website if nobody is visiting them? That is why we strive day and night to drive traffic to our websites and blogs, right?
Well, what would you think if I told you that you should treat your Twitter profile as if it were your website or blog? In other words, you should attract traffic to your Twitter profile just the exact same way you would do for your website or blog. So the more traffic you drive to your Twitter profile, the more followers you will have.
But again, as I mentioned before: QUALITY! So the more targeted, the better it is for you!
This sounds like everyone knows it. However, many people unfortunately overlook this very important detail. Instead, they concentrate on less important things like the frequency of Twitter usage.
But as I mentioned earlier, it is HOW you use Twitter. So the key is sending traffic to your profile.
When fishing, when you want to catch as many fish as possible, you use a large net and spread it as far as you can, right? Likewise, when you want to build your Twitter profile you should keep working on sending visitors to your profile.
With that in mind, you want to offer some sort of incentive. Why would someone visit your blog or website? They are looking for freebies. Why would someone follow you on Twitter? What’s in it for your visitors? Apart from your friends and relatives, if someone wants to follow you on Twitter, they will most definitely expect some kind of incentive in return. So just the same way you offer free giveaways on your blog and website, you should think of doing the same thing on your Twitter! - Once you build up a relationship with your followers, ask them to recommend your profile to their friends and other users and offer to do the same for them.
There is another way to increase your Twitter followers which is simply to follow other users on Twitter. But you must be very careful with this as you might get reported as a spammer.

How to Use Twitter to Create an Information Sharing Network
Twitter is a Social Networking website that is unique in that the communication between it’s users is limited to 140 characters. No matter what you have to communicate, you need to do it 140 characters, so Twitter is not for folks who like to expound on their thoughts.
(Twitter is often referred to as a micro-blogging network, due to it’s 140 character “blog”, or Tweet. On Twitter, “Tweets” are also referred to as “Updates”.)
Twitter is a simple platform that enables users to create their own unique Social Networks. There really is no limit to the kinds, and types, of networks that can be created, so long as they comply with the Twitter Terms of Service, and fit into the 140 character Twitterverse.
Without getting into too much detail, here, a Twitter network consists of folks who “Follow” you, and receive your Tweets on their home screen. If you “Follow” them, you receive their Tweets on your home screen. Folks who follow each other are Friends.
The effect is that you have a continuous stream of Tweets from those folks whom you Follow.
If you have created your network correctly, you will have a virtual ticker-tape of information flowing on your home screen that is tailored to your interests, whatever they may be. Your personal information IQ will sky rocket because, instead of you spending your time hunting, and searching, and mining the Internet by yourself, you have a small army of network friends who are sharing information with you.
It’s really cool. With Twitter, you’ll find scores of sources in your Twitter stream that you couldn’t possible find on your own.
And if you have a question, or need some information, just ask. Someone is bound to know the answer, and/or point you to the solution.
Hints for Creating a Quality Twitter Network
Setup a Twitter Account:
1) Decide on a single topic, or subject that you like; do not try to cram several subjects into a single Twitter account.
2) Create a clever, but clear Twitter Username that reflects your subject. For instance, if your subject is about Rail Road Trains, your Twitter name could be “RailRoadTrains”. Twitter names are limited to 15 characters. (This name is not set in stone; you may change it at any time.)
3) The set-up asks for your Full Name. You can use your real name, or a nick name, or a clever “handle”. For instance, if your topic is “Trains”, you might have a name such as “Engineer Bill”, etc Nautrally, real names are more friendly.
4) Create a textual profile that describes your interests. If it is about Trains, you might say that you live in a Caboose, or wish you could. Think carefully on this; you are limited to 160 characters. Look as it as being an introduction by yourself. Be sure to include buzz words, or key words; it’ll make it easier for like-minded Train folks to find you. The Profile can be modified any time; you may want to refine it as you gain more experience Do not leave the Profile blank.
4) Be sure to upload an avatar/image to your account. The default Twitter avatars are boring. A photo of yourself is considered most friendly; though it is not required.
5) Eventually, you may want to jazz-up your screen background. A locomotive in the background, or a train track, etc, would work. With the recent changes to Twitter, the background images have lost their previous prominence.
Start Building Your Network:
1) First, before you start searching for folks to follow, post some Tweets (also called “Upates”) of your own so folks will know what you are about; maybe dozen, or so.. Folks will judge whether or not to follow you based on your Profile, and your Tweets.

In general, the best way to begin building your network is to search Twitter for like-minded folks, and then read their profiles, and Tweets, and, if appropriate to your topic, click their Follow button to include them in your network. (The Twitter search box is found at the top of your Twitter page.)
At some point, your new “Followe” will be notified that they have a new Follower, and they can visit your Twitter page, and decide whether to follow you.
2) Give credit, where credit is due. Tweets that you receive can be re-Tweeted to your followers by clicking a Retweet icon below the Tweet. Since your netowrk is about learning, and sharing, when you read a valuable Tweet, be sure to share it with your followers by re-Tweeting it to them.
You will find that many of the Tweets you recieve, have been re-Tweeted by folks you follow; a single Tweet can be propagated and seen by thousands of followers of followers.
Re-Tweeting is also a way of recognizing another person’s efforts. Folks appreciate the recognition, and you’ve made a new friend.
This is a great way to encourage new follows to follow you. When you find someone new to follow, try to re-Tweet them; they will be more likely to follow you back.
3) As you start to accumulate Followers, view their pages, and see who they follow, and follow the same folkes, if appropriate.
4) Be patient; it can take some time, at first, to accumulate followers, but it eventually snow-balls. In a short time, as your network, and your reputation, grows you will be spending more time vetting new followers, than searching for followers.
5) Do not get hung-up on trying to amass thousands of Followers. Concentrate on creating a high quality network, not a high quantity network. You’ll get more quality information, and enjoyment, from a small group of the right people, than a large group of strangers.
The number of follows/followers depends very much on the topic. A network that concentrates on “Vowel Sounds” would probably garner a few hundred followers, while a network about politics will garner a few thousand.
Realistically, while you may have 1,500 followers, there may only be a core group of steady, and consistent users that numbers in the hundreds.
If you have 30,000 followers/follows, you’re doing something wrong, unless you are a rock star.
6) Be sure to “vet” (approve, or qualify) all of your follows/followers; don’t follow someone just because they follow you. If someone new follows you, vet them, and make sure that they will fit into your network. Read their Profile, and see what they are Tweeting. If they don’t fit, don’t follow them.
When you follow someone who follows you, you are Twitter friends. Friends make for a quality network, and a quality Twitterverse.
There is alot of spamming on Twitter. When someone follows you, you can either follow them back, ignore them and let them follow you, or you can block them so that they can’t follow you.
I tend to block all spammers, so I won’t be bothered with future follows. And I often will not follow someone because I don’t think they will contribute to my network/topic, however, it doesn’t bother me if they simply want to follow me, anyway.
7) Review your network from time to time, and clean-house. If someone is not participating, or sharing, or staying on-topic, then just Unfollow them, and make room for someone else.
Enjoy Twitter, and be friendly, helpful, polite, respectful, and grateful (re-Tweet others). Tweet often, but not too much; don’t overwhelm your followers with Tweets. The quality of your Tweets counts more than the quantity.
Think quality.

TweetCreate – Creating a Tweet:
When composing a Tweet, do not be afraid of the 140 character limit. Just create the ideal Tweet, regardless of length, and then pare it down to the 140 character limit. It can be challenging, but you’ll get the knack in no time at all.
Do not create Tweets that look like a personalized license plate; i.e., do not be so clever and cryptic with symbols and abbreviations, etc, that it takes a genius to discern the Tweet. Instead, keep it simple; keep it short; keep it clear in 140 characters.
Keep your audience in mind when creating a Tweet; make sure they can discern enough information to want to learn more (by clicking a link). Keep in mind that you want to share infomration with them, so that they will also share with you; so… focus on providing valuable information, and creating Tweets that will peak the curiosity of your followers. It’s fun.
Stick to your topic as much as possible. For example, perhaps you know of a good website about Trains that you would like to share. You could create a Tweet that looks something like this:
I think this is a great website with tons of Locomotive specifications. http://greatlocomotivesoftheworld.com Must see !
To conserve characters, you should use a URL shortener to decrease the size of the web link (the “http://, etc”); it can make a significant difference. There are any number of shorteners available; a quick Internet search will provide many choices. A quick scan of Twitter will reveal the most popular URL shorteners.
Anatomy of a Tweet
There is no particular format to a Tweet; it only needs to occur within the 140 character limit.
The Tweet format, above, which I use, is my favorite for sharing information. It is broken into three sections.
The first textual section, ” I think this is a great website with tons of Locomotive specifications.” is the subject/title of the Tweet, often an article, or blog, etc.
The second section is the URL. With Twitter, all URL’s are active links that can be clicked for access to the Internet site. (Be sure the links are correct, and valid).
The third section is optional; I use it for comments, or follow-up information. Something like “Must see” adds your personal stamp of approval. Folks don’t want just a list of URL’s; they also want to know if it’s worth their time.
What About Twitter Tools and Applications
There are a zillion third party software tools that are available for Twitter users; maybe more.
You don’t really need any, though there many that make your Twitter life better.
For instance, it’s nice to send a message to a new follower. You can do this manually, through Twitter’s Direct Message capabilities, or you can send a generic automated message. If you do it manually, it can become very time consuming, and your message doesn’t really change, so why not just send a generic message ?
While an automated message may not seem very friendly, most folks accept them as a given. I use a third party Twitter tool to send an automated message when someone follows me, to thank them, and tell them that I vet all my Followers.
I only use a couple Twitter tools, on a regular basis:
1) I use a third party web service, SocialOomph, to send the automated welcome messages, and track new followers, etc.
2) I use TweetCreate, a desktop application, to help me create quality Tweets. (This is a tool that I cannot live without.)
Conclusion
Originally, I was a skeptic about the value of Twitter; after all, how can one build a true Social Network, 140 characters at a time ? I was pleasantly surprised. You really do get to know your folks; their quirks, and opinions, and foibles, and strengths. And they get to know your’s, too.
And it does really broaden your knowledge, and perspective, because you are commiserating with a like minded group of folks who live in all parts of the country, and the world, and you find out that their concerns, and their problems aren’t a whole lot different from yours.

Open any newspaper, read any online news story, listen to your favourite radio presenter or watch TV, and at some point you’ll hear or see the words “follow me on Twitter” or “share this on Twitter”.
And yet, despite its widespread use throughout the media, the entertainment industry, the business world and in millions of households worldwide, “what is Twitter?” is a question I still hear regularly.
So – what is Twitter?
You’ll often hear Twitter described as a micro-blogging site. Imagine a blog where you can only publish posts up to 140 characters in length (the same amount of space as you have in a text message on your phone). In a nutshell, that’s what Twitter is; an easy way to conduct text message-sized public conversations with all your contacts at once.
On Twitter, you make new contacts by “following” people. If you come across someone who really interests you – for example, a political figure, a commercial brand, a celebrity or one of your real-life friends – you click a button to follow that person, and when they post a “Tweet” (Twitter-speak for a message), these Tweets will appear in your “timeline” – a real-time list of messages posted by the people you follow. By the same token, if someone is interested in reading your Tweets, they will follow you, and any messages you Tweet will appear in their timeline.
Most Tweets are addressed to nobody in particular. When Twitter started, the question at the “post a Tweet” box was “What are you doing?” – and so, you’ll often see Tweets that tell you that someone’s going into a meeting, or travelling home from work, and so on.
